Little Penang Street Market Held On The Last Sunday Of Every Month At Upper Penang Road

The Little Penang Street Market, a monthly Sunday showcase of Malaysian arts and crafts, was launched on Sunday, 30th July at Upper Penang Road. The street market will be held on the last Sunday of every month from 10 am to 8 pm. It is aimed at revitalising traditional trades and ethnic crafts and to provide a regular market place and platform for Penang-based talents in arts, crafts, design and music. Little Penang Street Market is a non-profit project coordinated by Lestari Heritage Network with a grant from New York-based Institute for Cultural Enterprise which was founded in 2000 by the Ford Foundation to support cultural entrepreneurship around the world.

The launch saw curious tourists and locals, who turned up in full force, browsing through the the products offered by the 60 odd venders. Stall-holders came from different walks of life, with all manner of locally made products on sale, from homemade organic herbal remedies to beautifully designed fabric handbags, hand-painted tiles and T-shirts, costume jewellery and beaded shoes. Visitors were also treated to different demonstrations of artistic skill such as the art of carving traditional wayang kulit (shadow play) characters and the art of making miniature figures from dough as well as entertained by numerous local talented musicians and singers.

All in all, the event was a huge success, judging from the smiles of the vendors and the satisfied faces of the visitors, most of whom left with an item or two from the market. The next market day is Sunday, 27th August. See you there.
