Trip Report by Janmar August 2002

What a wonderful holiday we had in Singapore & Penang! Firstly we travelled with Singapore Airline and stayed 2 nights 3 days in Singapore. Singapore was great, so clean. shopping in Orchard Road, dinner at Clark Quay, Boat Quay and Newton Circus high tea and Singapore slings at the Raffles more shopping in Orchard Road train trip around the island walk through Botanical Gardens. so much to do - not enough time.

Now onto Penang. From the moment we stepped off the plane we were made to feel welcome on this beautiful island. It is fifteen years since I last visited Penang - I was so surprised at how many high rise buildings there are. Komtar was the only tall building in those days. Also we found the designs and colours of the new buildings very interesting and are a credit to the architects.

On arrival at the ParkRoyal we were treated like royalty. The staff were so friendly and helpful at all times. Fresh towels twice a day, chocolates on the pillows at night, basket of fruit - these gestures were much appreciated by us and we would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again. We were also more than satisfied with the restaurants on the streets and in the hotels. We sampled food from the markets, dined in style at Tiffins in the Park Royal high tea at the Shangri-La, ate at many of the restaurants at Batu Ferringhi (Indian Palace, Mario's, Fantasy, Jasmines to name a few) - what an absolute delight. We didn't have a bad meal at any of these places.

We shopped for shoes and dvds. I thought that Island Plaza had the best range of shoes. (unfortunately we ran out of time and didn't get to Gurney Plaza). We also found the best range of dvds at Komtar. I can't remember what floor they were on as we got lost about three times and when we asked directions we were sent from the ground floor to the top floor to the second floor to the third floor and found them by chance. We didn't do much sight seeing as this holiday was for rest and relaxation (we feel we now have our bearings and will see more of Penang on our next holiday) although we did go to the butterfly farm and the botanical gardens and was pleased with what we saw.

Overall we had and a fantastic holiday. we enjoyed the strolls along the road at night checking out the markets, lazing by the pool, stroll along the beach, sunsets and monsoonal showers, the restaurants, the Park Royal Hotel, the shopping and most of all the people from the porter at the hotel to the girl that cleaned our room, to the barmen at happy hour, to the waitresses in the restaurants, to the girl at the money changers next door to Jasmines restaurant and the taxi drivers. what a wonderful bunch characters that made us feel so welcome on this beautiful island.
