Trip Report March 2004 by Jon D

Arrived back in Adelaide after 10 fabulous days in your lovely city. Wife, 2 children and myself can't speak highly enough of your country's people and friendliness. We did several tourists' things including, around the island, batik, butterfly, fishing villages, temples, Penang Hill (80rm) expensive for locals but worth it for us. We had a fantastic trishaw ride through the city. Very rewarding and the history of Penang is amazing. We did plenty of shopping. Shoes so cheap, dvds all work and are region free, Enjoy the night market some traders were a bit pushy trying to make a sale but understandable because of the competition. Some of our favourite places were Marios Batu Ferringhi, terrific Italian food expensive compared to regular cafes but worth the treat, Shirly the lady who sold us dvds no pressure and very friendly. Kareem the tailor opposite the Park Royal did a very good job on my trousers and shirts,

Gurney Plaza, Prangin Mall and Komtar. For future tavellers as a guide these are some of the prices expect to pay when in Penang, 25rm for a taxi from batu ferringhi to komtar, 20rm to gurney plaza, best way to see sights hire a driver for 100rm for 4 hours, If going to Langkawi catch the ferry yourself and hire a driver over there it is so much cheaper than booking a tour, Cheap beer 84rm for carton of 24 at Gurney Plaza supermarket, dvds fixed price 10rm. .We stayed at the Parkroyal for the 2nd time, a great place for a family of 4 the family rooms offer a king and queen size bed with balcony and sea views and in my opinion is the best hotel along batu ferringhi for families. I looked at all the other hotels while we where there and was very impressed with the Golden Sands but no family room as such, Great for couples or family if you want adjoining rooms. Once again i would like to thank everyone who gave me information on Penang Talk before we arrived. It certainly made the trip easier, We will be back hopefully next year for our 3rd trip.bye for now. Jon.D
