Trip Report by Michele February 2002

What a wonderful holiday we had!!! We arrived in Penang, after a few days in KL. Flew with MAS, good flights and we didn't encounter any problems. Even survived KLIA!!!! We stayed at the Parkroyal Hotel in Batu Ferringhi. When we arrived we upgraded our room to a Deluxe SeaView, with a balcony overlooking the pool, ocean and 1/2 of BF beach - Magnificent!! I highly recommend this hotel, the staff were excellent and the location was spot on too, and the pool area was second to none.

While in Penang we visited Fruit Farm, which was very interesting, the best bit being a big fruit platter at the end - and being the fruit lover I am, I thought I was in heaven. We also went to Kek Lok Si Temple which was really impressive - especially the temple with the all the Budda's. We also took the railway up to Penang Hill, although it was a long, slow trip up and down, the view at the top was certainly worth it. The Butterfly Farm was another visit, we were very impressed by it, we haven't seen a Butterfly Farm of this quality before. We did a day trip with Langkawi Coral to Palau Payer, with Rainy. Certainly a beautiful spot. The Coral was mostly dead, but the fish life was awesome!!! Jamie even managed to swim with the Sharks on the beach (not me - too much Aussie in me - Do Not Swim with Sharks!!!!). Fantastic Day, but for your own comfort and those of others, choose only to do this if you can swim.

Also did a day trip to Langkawi - another beautiful island. Rainy took us on the guided tour of Teluk Bahang. She was almost a local and knew where everything was. Thanks for a good afternoon Rainy. Had a good time exploring Batu Ferringhi. The Long Beach Cafe became a favourite very quickly. Food was so cheap and so good. Our beer often cost more that the food!!! We were also very impressed with The Moghul Arch and the Kampong Cafe. Shopping was also very good. Watches for 20 ringget, DVD's for 10, 3 CD's for 10 and T-shirts 10 ringget. We had a lot of fun on the night markets that stretch Batu Ferringhi. We also recommend Sparks Tailors if you need anything made. Jamie got a Suit and a second pair of trousers, and I got 2 suits and another woollen skirt - very pleased with them, and the price was excellent.

A highlite of the trip was meeting other Penang Talk chatters. First Rainy, the Ewen and his sister, then Angela and her husband. All fantastic people!!! Thank you all for your company. You all helped make our trip the wonderful memories that is now. Rainy, we hope to see you in cold Canada around Christmas!!!

I'd also like to say a big thanks to Kayes. I have followed this board for the 10 months before our trip - and managed to have a good idea of what to expect and what to do before we came. Your insight into the Island is very much appreciated. Thanks again Penang for a wonderful holiday Michele
