My Favourite Things To Do In Penang by Rainy
a little overdue but better late than never... ;o)
Favorite city sights: first ride both the red & green routes on the free a/c shuttle bus that goes near all the major sights & shopping areas in the historic downtown ; walk the two heritage trails, or at least see the Kapitan Keling mosque, the nearby Goddess of Mercy temple & the Esplanade area; walk the 7 Streets Precinct area; see the Chinese clan jetties; do the Gurney Drive/Burmah Road loop walk or drive to see mansions and temples (start at Gurney Plaza, Gurney Drive to Jl Sultan Ahmad Shah, turn right on Jl Larut, turn right on Burmah Road Jl Cantonment in Pulau Tikus); visit the reclining & upright Buddha temples across from each other on Larong Burmah in Pulau Tikus.
Favorite island sights - Kek Lok Si temple complex; Penang Hill; Botanical Garden; the fishing piers & the Monday night flea market in Teluk Bahang; hire a local car & driver & do an around island tour to include the Emperor's Footprint temple & gardens on the waterfront at Batu Maung; take a local bus, any one, & ride it to the end of the route & back for cheap sightseeing & cultural exchange i.e. to Batu Maung, to Gertak Sanggul fishing village, or circle excursion to Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang:, BF & back to Komtar.
Favorite mainland sights - the new Taoist Nine Emperor Gods Temple in Butterworth, the Penang Bird Park.
Favorite excursions - Langkawi Coral “Pulau Payar” snorkel/dive tour; 2 day 1 night excursion to “Cameron Highlands” with hired car & driver, with stops enroute in Taiping, Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar, stay in Tanah Rata; 2 day 1 night minibus shopping excursion to “Hatyai Thailand”.
Favorite winter festival events - Chief Minister’s “CNY” open house at Fort Cornwallis; watching “Thaipusam” chariot procession beside Gama Dept store; watch Thaipusam body piercing at Larong Kulit flea market grounds on Dato Kramat & watch the procession from that area.
Favorite night spot - Rozell’s in Tanjung Bungah
Favorite bakeries - Continental bakery & Adventist Hospital Bakery.
Favorite hair stylist - Andy at Camee (unisex) Salon at 231-B Burmah Road.
Favorite laundry - Kim Kim’s in BF
Favorite department stores - Gama near Komtar & Sunshine Square in Bayan Baru, also best place to buy liquor, beer & smokes.
Favorite malls, shopping centers - Midlands/Onestop, Megamall in Seberang Prai on the mainland.
Favorite place to buy fake watches - Mudd kiosk on the main level at Midlands/Onestop center.
Favorite place for fabrics - Kamdar Dept store on Burmah Road.
Favorite city shop - Sam's Batik Shop on corner of Penang Road & Chulia
