Trip Report by SBS June 2003

Remember me? Hi Kayes and friends from the forum. With your help we (my wife & two kids) have a most wonderful time in Penang last Dec. And last June, I was back with three of my colleagues. We managed to rent two bikes in Chulia street. (At RM20 per bike per day) Well, since we are all unfamiliar with the roads, we just drove everywhere. It was fantastic experience and we never get lost. And in July, I was back again. This time with just my wife.

Arrived at 2pm and checked in at Berjaya Hotel.(I can feel that my wife is very excited, just like our honeymoon all over again she said). Telephone for a bike to be send over (manage to get the name card from the owner on my last visit), we hit the road at 2.45pm.We have our lunch (fried duck, BBQ pork etc.)at Carnarvon Street. It was delicious and so cheap. Next we just drove around all the adjuction streets soaking all the sights and smells of old Georgetown. At night we went to the street hawker stalls in Macalister Road.

The next morning after breakfast in the Hotel, we went to Chowrasta Market. What a wonderful sight. Fish, veg.fruits, cloths, utensils, everythings, there are everywhere. Next we went to a few supermarkets which is my wife favourites, namely, Prangin Mall, Komtar,Gurney Plaza, Island Plaza, etc.

The next day while at the lobby, I discover about St. Anne's Feast. After getting some information about its location, we decided go and find it. It was in Seberang Prai in the Kulim- Butterworth Expressway, and that means across The Penang Bridge. We kick off at 9.30am following the sign of the bridge and it was wonderful pasting the beautiful bridge on a motor-bike with the sea breeze blowing in our face. I don't know how, but at about 12noon we reach our destination, but not after some anxious moments and worried questions, like are you sure we are on the right path, etc. Looking up at St Anne's Church as I park my bike, was a feeling of pride and happiness that. We from Sarawak was able to come here. After offering our prayers we stroll aroung the church compound and saw many tents around and we were told that many faithfuls from across the country and afar were camping in the church vicinity one week in advance. The Great Feast falls on the 27th of july and on that day there will be thousands and thousand of worshippers and luckily we arrived on the 25th.

On the way back we went to the Penang Bird Park and do some shopping at Megamall Penang and Carrefour. Reach our hotel at 10.30pm. The next morning, drove our bike to BF, try some durians at Air Itam, past Tg. Bungah,Gurney Drive (road block, preparing for Food & Fruits Fair) Fort Cornwallis Esplanade, Lebuh Light, Weld Quay, Lebuh Chulia, Lebuh Pantai, Jl.Magazine, Jl.Burmah to Pulau Tikus and back to our hotel. And after a good bath & rest we were at the one year once Food&Fruits Fair at 6pm. What a sight indeed. Stalls &stalls of mouth watering food & fruits everywhere. We mingle and jostel with the crowd and went back past midnight.

The next day was bye-bye day and after a quick round of Georgetown. We reluctanly hand over the bike at Chulia Street and catch a taxi back to our hotel. With 2 bags before we arrive,we have to struggle with 6 baggages because everythings looks so cheap in Penang, so said my wife. Already we are planning for our next trip back and Penang we will be back. Bye, and best regards.
