Your description fits what we know as roti jala, a local pancake made by the Indians. This is, as you mentioned, eaten with the hands, as one would with roti chanai(BTW, roti chanai is also known as roti prata) This roti is torn into bite pieces, dipped into curry and eaten. Incidentally, my wife has learned to make it.
